Domestic Workers in Singapore

Housemaid is a platform where employers can find a maid best suited to their requirements. Apart from providing the best experience of finding a suitable maid, housemaid also updates its viewers about the latest news on maids working in Singapore.

As a part of a volunteer group called LIPS (Ladies in the Power of Service), domestic workers spend time visiting patients warded at Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for more than a year. They talk, play mahjong, sing and engage in fun activities bringing joy to the lives of the patients Of the 1000 long stay patients, only one third receive regular visitors.

Mr. Chua, a 66-yr patient at IMH for 13yrs with schizophrenia feels a change in routine while talking and interacting with the volunteers.LIPS was started in November, 2012 by a group of 6 domestic workers as a meaningful way to spend their one day off at work each week. Presently, a total of 54 members volunteer with the group which is growing at a fast pace majorly through the word of mouth.

Inspite of such noble ideas, there are numerous cases where the domestic workers especially the foreigners face various disputes with their employers. One such case being when a couple did not want their Indian maid back even after she was cleared of the charges of stealing as filed against her by her employers. They wanted her to be prosecuted.  FAST volunteers realized that she might not be prepared yet to work in Singapore as she felt that she had a lot of work to do and also complained about her employers being too strict and always finding fault in her work, whether it be washing, ironing of clothes or cooking.

Mr. William Chew, 58, Fast’s Executive Director told that it was then when they had to make a judgment call that working in Singapore might not be the best option for her at present as she was not justifying her job scope as a domestic helper. FAST volunteers managed to get the air ticket booked by her employers to get her back home but there was still something more to it. The maid accused her employers of not paying her the salary, a sum of $150, for the investigation period which the employers were hesitant to pay the full amount.

But FAST managed to convince them for the same and the maid was sent back to her home country, India within next 2 days.Because of this, the Foreign Domestic Worker Association for Social Support and Training (FAST) has decided to intervene and provide mediation services to the Foreign Domestic Workers (FDW) of Singapore by playing the role of a neutral third party in such disputes. Since September, FAST has tackled four cases.

Celebrating their 10th Anniversary in February 2016, FAST has announced the official launch of a mediation service for maids and employers with 5 mediators on board who will be provided with the training on labor laws and FDW rights beforehand. Initially, the mediation sessions will be held twice a month, in the FAST clubhouse at Tanjong Pagar.
